‘Tis the Season for Holiday Cheer at Bowen’s Wharf
50th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting
Saturday, December 5th, 2020 at 6pm
FREE ADMISSION!
This holiday season, the Bowen’s Wharf Annual Christmas Tree Lighting is back in a whole new way, celebrating the 50th anniversary of this special local tradition. We’ve reimaged the ceremony to safely kick off the holidays by the sea, with a brief program at 5:30 pm followed by a live stream of the countdown on our Facebook and Instagram pages promptly at 6 pm. While we wish we could celebrate this milestone occasion with pomp and circumstance, the health of the community is far more important, so we invite you to come see the spectacular Norway spruce and visit our merchants for all of your holiday shopping needs throughout the season!
Please note that those who chose to attend in person will be required to wear face coverings in accordance with local public health guidance and are encouraged to practice physically social distancing from other groups as much as possible.
All of our locally owned shops and restaurants will be open, so spend the afternoon and evening browsing the many merchants for unique gifts for your loved ones, and even yourself! Make a restaurant reservation early to watch the harbor lights glisten off of the water, and head over to our Facebook Event Page for the latest updates!
A special tree for a special occasion
This year’s 2020 tree has arrived! Locally grown and tenderly cared for all the way up until it was delivered, this towering Norway spruce came to us from Pachet Brook Tree Farm in Tiverton! We patiently watched as the crane lowered the 35-foot evergreen and securely anchored down with six guy lines. Can you believe that back in the day, when Bowen’s Wharf first started hosting the annual event, the tree often blew over when there was a large gust of wind? Check out our Facebook and Instagram page for the full time-lapse of the tree installation!
Small Business Saturday
’Tis the season to dazzle for fabulous fashions and wonderful waterfront dining. Enjoy the holidays by the sea at the Anchor of Newport during this season of giving. Now more than ever, small businesses (like our locally owned boutique shops, restaurants and galleries) need our help and attention during the busiest time of the year. There are many ways to support small businesses while respecting public health guidance and following the new procedures here in Newport. Here are a few to get started!
1. Purchase gift cards from your favorite shops and restaurants
One of the best things about gift cards is that they can be given as a gift or redeemed later!
2. Order online
Many of our shops are now available to find and browse through online! With local pickup or delivery, be sure to check out all that our stores have to offer!
3. Teach yourself to cook (or not)
While restaurants may have limited seated capacity, many are offering take out and/or delivery as an alternative! So when you’re in the mood for your favorite dish or to try something new, consider looking up a local restaurant for dinner tonight!
4. Keep moving
While the gyms are closed temporarily, there are plenty of ways to keep moving even as winter sets in. Strolling along Bowen’s Wharf is a great outdoor experience that gets the blood pumping when that cabin fever starts to set in. Whether you’re an avid runner or just a stroller, perusing the shops and docks is an enjoyable way to get some fresh air. Plus, you can stop in to one of our locally owned boutiques for some sportswear, a cup of coffee, a small gift or a quick bite while you’re here!
5. Style your remote workspace
From timeless American-made fashion and accessories to quality craftsmanship featuring work from local artists, to nautically inspired accessories; your new WFH space can be stylish and productive all while supporting your local small businesses!
However you choose to shop this Small Business Saturday, just know that there are many ways to support our local businesses, from referring a friend who’s looking for that unique gift, to sharing a post on social media! Be sure to check out our website for a full directory of local businesses.
