Newport Wooden Boat Show Exp ands at Historic Bowen’s Wharf
Classic wooden boats from all over New Engl and will be sailing into the boutique marina at Bowen’s Wharf for the exp anded 2017 Newport Wooden Boat Show, September 14th through September 17th.
“Boats that intrigued owners over 85 years ago are coming together with contemporary builds of heritage designs. The show features the beauty and finish of both traditional historic and modern power and sailboats. These are boats built today, by traditional boatbuilders, with modern and traditional techniques for maximum enjoyment,” says Bartlett Dunbar, president of Bowen’s Wharf Company.
Bowen’s Wharf Newport Wooden Boat Show will showcase the heritage of wooden boat building through a curated collection of sail and motor yachts ranging from the freshly restored 12-foot Columbia tender to Wild Horses, the 76-foot W-Class sailing yacht.
In-water exhibitors will be at Bowen’s Wharf Marina and on-l and exhibitors will be situated throughout the historic wharf property and under the festival tents. Free admission daily.
At the marina, this event offers a rare opportunity to step aboard eleven boats. Sparkman & Stephens is bringing Courageous and Fidelio, the 1956 restored 27’ racing and cruising yawl with its glorious double-planked mahogany hull. Well-traveled, lovingly cared for and restored, Fidelio is available for purchase.
Duchess, the classic 1930’s 50′ Elco motoryacht, is also for sale. Proceeds from a number of boats offered through Block Isl and Maritime Funding, and the two waterfront bars at the boat show, benefit Rhode Isl and’s official sailing education vessel, the 200-foot tall ship, Oliver Hazard Perry. The ship will be docked at Perry Mill Wharf for visits.
Alternative education, adventure and seamanship opportunities are on offer through staff and crew from Oliver Hazard Perry RI alongside Tall Ships Portl and, Tall Ships America, Ocean Navigator magazine and others.
Visitors will enjoy access to over twenty exhibitors spanning l and and sea throughout the historic waterfront district in addition to the exclusive selection of shops, eateries and an array of heritage and marine-based tours. Live Caribbean and folk music, waterfront bars with craft cocktails, nautical art and fashion displays round out the show.
“This event in Newport brings the sights and sounds of waves against the planking together with the memories of great designers, top builders and restorers past and present,” says Dunbar.
The full array of Down-East Style boats, Hinckley and Hunt, are returning to Bowen’s Basin as part of the Newport International Boat Show (concurrent) and are accessible through Bowen’s Wharf. The world of wooden boats is at once mysterious and charming, gr and and humble, always masterful. While Newport is known as the yachting capital of the world it’s rare that sail and power yachts are available in the same setting as the very people who design, build and restore them only steps away from two other boat shows.
The event is held concurrently with the Newport International Boat Show and Newport Brokerage Boat Show, tickets and trade passes for both are available online and in person through those events. All shows will run from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, with the exhibits, shops & restaurants open later at Bowen’s Wharf. There is a water shuttle between the events that will stop at the Bowen’s Wharf Marina.
To celebrate wood boatbuilding and restoration this is a compact event that fosters intimate conversations and the exchange of ideas at the anchor of Newport in the heart of New Engl and.

Sheldon Fine Art will be featuring the well-loved painters, photographers and sculptors: O’Malley-Keyes, Thompson, Rigby, Pollera, Kahn, McAuliffe, Hobbs and Sabol as well as the full array of their two-story gallery on site on famed America’s Cup Avenue.
