Have you ever wondered about the history of the Bowen’s Wharf Company logo? The iconic BW oval was created by local stone carver Fud Benson. Seen below this logo is another iconic image, the woodcut print of our Christmas Tree Lighting crafted by Ilse Nesbitt. Her work is on exhibit now at the Redwood Library on Bellevue Avenue or you can walk to her studio on the Point section of town!
Fud Benson has passed the torch to his own son, Nick Benson, seen in the TEDTalk below. Nick Benson is now manager of the six-generation old John Stevens Shop in Newport, purchased from the Stevens family by gr andfather Benson in 1927. This historical workshop is on the fringe of Newport’s Old Quarter. Holiday Lantern Walking Tours, and Colonial Newport in Winter are two tours we sell at our Pilot House in conjunction with the Newport Historical Society. This tour and many others, such as UnDecked Halls at Rough Point Mansion, International Tennis Hall of Fame or the Audrain Automobile Museum, are also offered at our Pilot House as key components in our historical partnerships program. Swing by to purchase tickets, pick up a greeting card, or simply inquire further about all the fun activities we can offer. ALL BOOKS are 15% off and BOWEN’S WHARF ORNAMENTS are 10% off. With the holidays upon us there is no time like the present for a day of family fun exploring the art and history that is alive and well in Newport RI! SHOP SATURDAYS are underway and be sure to ask your favorite gallery about their tax breaks on art.
