Music Festivals and Busking at Bowen’s

With so much musical madness and culture around the corner, here’s how to navigate the upcoming music and film activities happening in Newport this month. While the Newport Music Festival (Classical) is already underway throughout town, this weekend the Newport Folk Festival, runs July 24th – July 26th at Fort Adams. Folk music has been a presence in Newport since 1959, when the Newport Folk Festival was first founded. In fact Bob Dylan’s premiere national performance occurred at Newport Folk Festival in 1963. So while we at Bowen’s Wharf do not sell tickets to this event we do provide Jamestown Ferry tickets (stopping at Ford Adams) and Fort Adams admissions at our Pilot House.

Bridging the gap between Newport Folk Fest and Newport Jazz Fest (more on that in a moment) is the Newport BridgeFest running July 27th – 30th. The Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County created BridgeFest to give music enthusiasts a reason to stay and locals a reason to celebrate! In addition to the many other Newport BridgeFest activities one of the most talked about BridgeFest events is back: The Busking at Bowen’s series presents an up front and intimate setting for musicians right here at our own Bowen’s Wharf. It’s hard to beat such a beautiful waterfront setting so click here for the full schedule. We will then be ending BridgeFest and Busking at Bowen’s on a high note (pun intended!) with a free showing of What Happened, Miss Simone? on July 30th at 8:30pm. This event at Doris Duke’s Rough Point is hosted by Newport Film. If you’re interested in touring Rough Point earlier that day as well, don’t forget our Pilot House sells admission tickets!

Wrapping up many of Newport’s musical festivities is the Newport Jazz Festival, July 31st – August 2nd also at Fort Adams. The first Newport Jazz Festival occurred in 1954. And even then there was, and still is, a mix of popular and well-known artists, with the equally important unsung jazz heroes. It truly is quite the experience. So if you’re looking to spend a few days in Newport, check out one or more of the music festivals, don’t forget about the anchor of Newport! Come park your car or bike, buy your ferry ticket to the Fort, or check which of our water tours is running a special and rendezvous back here later for a exquisite dining experience with one restaurants. The ending to a perfect day can always be found on Bowen’s Wharf.
